Four Kings?

Wow that was a great Heat game DCBA installation dinner on Saturday:

Trial lawyer Garrett Biondo is the incoming president of the Dade County Bar Association. He’s also a Miami Heat season-ticket holder who refuses to miss a big game.

But when it comes to Saturday’s Game 7 — arguably the biggest home affair in Heat history — he can’t be both.

At the same time the Heat and Celtics decide the Eastern Conference championship Saturday, Biondo will be about a mile south for his swearing in — at the Bar association’s black-tie gala, held at the Mandarin Oriental.

Think he’s disappointed? Imagine the 300 or so others in attendance who aren’t being recognized at the event. 

What grit, what determination -- Russomanno shoots, she scores!

Welcome to My New "Pop-Up" Restaurant!

It suddenly occurred to me -- much like my fledgling entry into the food truck craze -- that I should immediately open up a "pop-up" restaurant.

Here are the broad contours of my concept:

1.  Hip hop music will be banned.

2.  I plan to only serve food from Wisconsin.

(So I guess it's a pop-up lutefisk 'n cheese shop?)

3.  It will be located right next to my food truck.

Wish me luck kids, but then again -- how could it go wrong?

In other news, the talented Mr. and Mrs. Markus whooped it up on eighty-seven (or eight, but who's counting?) fed lawyers and scored a big win on behalf of his client before Magistrate Judge Torres.

Other than continually referring to himself in the plural ("our findings," "we" etc. -- it's ok, I do it too) it's a thorough and well-reasoned R&R.

Finally, we offer congrats (see?) to the Most Effective Lawyers in town -- if you did not win, that means you have a chance to be more effective next year -- that's what New Year's resolutions are all about.

Waiting for the Man.

I've been waiting in line in front of 73 West Flagler since 4 p.m. yesterday, $26 in my hand -- there is NO WAY I am missing out on this morning's free postage stamp cancellation:

This Friday, the United States Postal Service will designate the Dade County Courthouse as a postal station for the day. After a brief ceremony, with Chief Judge Brown and Miami's Postmaster attending, stamped envelopes brought to the post office's desk in the courthouse lobby will receive an official and unique cancellation bearing the centennial logo (similar to the one below). Each cancelled envelope will become a collector's item, especially those depicting Romero Britto's centennial artwork. If you do not have the below envelope, there will be some available - gratis. The number is limited. This event is for one day only.

Do you know how rare his stuff is?

This is just like that time in college I waited all night for Rush tickets!

(What?  I have been advised that the free Britto postage stamp cancellation logos will be made available on Friday, not today.)

Oh well, this really is exactly like the time I waited all night for Rush tickets.....

Breaking -- DCBA to Shutter Courthouse Night Box!

Like many of you, I received a note this morning from the DCBA, marking yet another passage of an era:

The Dade County Bar Association will no longer provide a filing box at the Dade County Courthouse for Third District Court of Appeal filings. All filings can now be made at the Third District Court of Appeal, in the night filing box located adjacent to the entrance steps at the Third District Court of Appeal, which is located at 2001 SW 117 Avenue, in Miami, Florida.  

Attorneys can now file directly at the Third District Court of Appeal throughout the evening and early morning. Documents place in the box prior to 8:00 a.m. will be clocked in as being "nightbox" filed as of the previous business day. There is no fee for using the filing box at the Third District Court of Appeal.

Since 1976, the DCBA has maintained a night filing box for the Third District Court of Appeal, located in the Clerk's Office at the Dade County Courthouse. Due to budget cuts affecting the Clerk of the Courts, that office reduced its hours and commenced closing at 4:00 p.m., thus eliminating the option of night filing.

Who else can remember late-night rushes to 73 West Flagler to drop off your expertly written pleading, followed by libations at Sally Russells, at which point everyone promptly forgot what case they were working on?

Note to Steve Zack: Bring The Claude!!

Ok, the countdown is on as we get ready for Steve Zack's big speech at the DCBA lunch today.

I am sure you have heard it around the courthouse, at the restaurants, on Brickell, at various Bar events etc. -- the buzz building, the clamor rising, the growing sense of anticipation as more and more judges and lawyers stand up and demand from Steve what HE MUST NOW DELIVER TO HIS ADORING FANS:

The trick to capturing Pepper’s thick Southern accent is to puff the cheeks, according to Zack.

Oh man, don't tell us your secrets!

Just find that zone and let it roll roll roll, get those cheeks red and your face redder and bring that house down.

The lunch starts at 11:45.

Holy Crap -- Steve Zack to Address Dade County Bar!

I'm not sure how the DCBA pulled this off, but somehow incoming ABA Bar President Steve Zack has agreed to address the dreamers, the schleppers, the unwashed masses --yes the local Bar -- at the January General Membership Luncheon on January 15.

One request Steve, if you are listening -- consider pulling out the mighty "Claude Pepper."

But be warned, my friend -- I have worked up a mean Dante Fascell and if necessary I will unleash it mere days from now at a little bar event next week.....
